Identify this spider

Ok, there's this big nasty looking spider hanging out by the sliding door to our room at my wife's parents' house. Somebody tell me what it is.

The spider, according to my scientific research, is:
Scary :)

We were just on the web (no pun intended) to see if we could identify this exact same spider. It's outside by our porch in Wisconsin. We don't know yet what it is.

Alas! The mystery is solved thanks to a friend from church. The spider is called argiope aurantia,a garden spider. You can see it and read about it at http://www.loven.plus.com/nicksspiders/naorder.htm It's basically harmless.
