Get the stuff for the thing to give to the guy

I don't know what it is, but lately the wife has developed a knack for being incredibly vague whenever she asks me about something. She'll ask me things like

• "Where's the thing?"
• "Did you do the thing for that guy?"
• "Did you send that stuff?"

and other equally vague questions. It's really amazing how vague she can be sometimes. Usually I'm left with a totally clueless look on my face and waving my hands trying to prompt her for more information about just what it is I'm supposed to do or know.

Maybe all this med school stuff has filled up her brain and she doesn't have room for everything else anymore.

All about CANDU

The latest issue of Physics in Canada is a cool theme issue with 4 really interesting articles about the features and capabilities of CANDU's newest ACR-700™ reactor. The first article, The CANDU™ Reactor — Past, Present, and Future talks about the evolution of CANDU reactors and design considerations that went into the ACR-700.

Another article (that I haven't gotten around to reading yet), ACR-700™ Reactor Physics and Fuel goes into some of the physics behind the various fuel core designs of the CANDU™ reactors.

It's a very interesting and instructive series of articles that shows what makes the CANDU™ reactor design simple to build (relatively), easy to operate and cheap to run.

Wear it like a geek badge

I got one of those USB thumb drives a little while ago. Just a simple little 256 MB PNY Attaché. But it comes with a lanyard that makes it handy to carry around your neck, instead of being relegated to the bottom of your pocket to get mangled by keys or something.

Normally I don't like to wear things around my neck, but I decided to try the lanyard with the thumb drive. Lots of other fellow computer guys around here carry thumb drives around their neck too. Having a thumb drive around your neck almost seems like some kind of geek identification device or badge. Now other things have made it onto the lanyard: my ID badge and radiation monitoring badge for starters. I'll have to stop adding things onto it before it gets too heavy.

I'll probably stop using it eventually because it tends to bounce around when I'm walking along, which is a little bit annoying. In the meantime, I'll just broadcast my geekiness around my neck.

Dealing with spam

From MT's ProNet comes some very good tips for dealing ith spam at the webserver level.

I'd just implemented mod_security a little while ago on my server, and while it hasn't stopped the flood of spammy referrers, it has kept a lot of them sucking up bandwidth. One thing I need to do is start keeping up with adding additional rules to mod_security. Soon I'll have to split it out into a separate file to include in httpd.conf. And to help with creating mod_security rules is Noel Jackson's mod_security rule generator.

The other things I'll be experimenting with are Peter Wood's blacklist_to_modsec script and the DSBL plugin from Brad Choate.

Another Star Trek series bites the dust

Word has it that Star Trek: Enterprise is being cancelled, with the final episode airing May 13th.

This is too bad. I was just starting to enjoy it too after the writers finally wrapped up that messy ugly Delta quadrant story arc that took up the first two and a half seasons. Why don't the Star Trek writers ever learn that time travel never works and just makes for ugly stories.

Just can't find anything good on TV anymore. With all the so-called 'reality show' crap on the air now there's just nothing worth watching anymore. It's a good thing I have the Babylon 5 DVDs to watch. I'll have to start working on the Stargate: SG1 and Farscape series now. Stock up before all the good TV gets drowned out by the crap.

Beating off referrer spam with mod_security

Mod_security so far has been quite effective at beating off the referrer spammers since I installed a few rules. It seems to have gotten even better since using blacklist_to_modsec to generate a bunch of rules based on MT Blacklist.

According to my stats, my server went from serving up at least 50MB of bandwidth/month to spammers (11 000 + requests/month) over the last two months (and that was just 403, 404 and 500 errors) to just 550kB (1500+ requests) so far this month (my default mod_security action is to send a 412 Precondition Failed error). They're still there and banging away, but instead of having to serve up the entire page requested, all they get is a 350 byte error page. That means a heck of a lot less bandwidth that I have to waste on spammers. There are still a few sneaking through, but it's not nearly as bad as it was before.

Back to basics

Well, the hardwood flooring throughout the house ended up being too expensive, so it's back to plain old carpet. The flooring that the builder was going to be put in was the solid ~3/4" wood plank-nail to the floor-3 coats of polyurethane type floor, not the thin snap together panel type floor. The wife is none too pleased about giving up the wood floor, but I figure we can always do the hardwood flooring a couple of years down the road anyway.

I think we'll have to get a second Roomba to help clean all the extra space.

Streaming Orange

Took this one yesterday morning at sunrise. It's a little blurry because of a slow shutter speed (1/4s) and lack of a tripod, but I think it captures nicely the neat orangy sunlight I get to wake up to most mornings.

Stuck on HGTV

So now that we're buying a house, the TV seems to be permanently stuck on HGTV. Even Food Network has been forced to take a back seat to the home improvement and decorating/redecorating shows like Design Remix, Decorating Cents and Weekend Warriors. I'm relegated to sneaking peeks on most of the other shows I like to watch now.

Watching these shows is interesting though. Home improvement doesn't seem that difficult. I think even I could do some of this stuff. Lots of work, and having the right tools seems to help. Of course it also helps to know what you're doing too. But then again, that's what shows like these are for, right?

Cataloging the library

Found this sweet little tool called OpenDB on Sourceforge.net. It's an insanely flexible cataloging system, allowing you to define whatever types of objects you want. It comes with several pre-defined types (DVD, VHS, CD, Laser disc, VCD), but oddly enough no book type. You can define users and assign the ownership of each item to a user. If you're always lending things out to people, you can keep track of that too.

Probably the best feature of the program though, are the plugins that let you do lookups against sites like Amazon.com, Internet Book List, FreeDB and IMDB. For books, all you need to do is enter the ISBN, do the lookup on Amazon and it fills in all the fields you've set up for the Book type you define. For other stuff, just enter Amazon's ASIN and look it up. Entering a title will get you a list of possibilities. Click the one you want and all the fields are filled in for you. It's awesome. No need to type in anything manually, which is probably the biggest barrier to create and maintain a comprehensive inventory of your stuff.

Runs on PHP and uses MySQL on the back end. The database schema is fairly small and compact for what it stores and tracks.

If you've got a collection of stuff you're looking to keep track of, this is a cool bit of software to check out.

Review: NCRP 147 - Structural Shielding Design for Medical X-ray Imaging Facilities

Amazon's review system apparently wasn't working when I tried to submit this there, so I'll put it here instead (it probably would have put it here anyway).

A few months ago, I unexpectedly received a fat FedEx envelope containing a draft copy of the much anticipated rewrite of NCRP 49: Structural Shielding Design and Evaluation for Medical Use of X-Rays and Gamma Rays of Energies Up to 10 MeV. Turned out it came to me because I'm on the AAPM Diagnostic Imaging Committee, and committee members were asked to review the draft to make sure there weren't any glaring errors or anything. Sweet, so I dug in. Been hearing about this thing for years, and was eagerly awaiting it's completion, like many other medical physicists out there.

A few weeks ago, I was rewarded for my efforts as a committee member reviewer by a surprise complimentary copy of the newly published NCRP 147. Even sweeter. And a hardcopy version to boot.

NCRP Report 147: Structural Shielding Design for Medical X-Ray Imaging Facilities
This is an invaluable upgrade to NCRP 49, and probably needs to be added to the collection of every medical imaging physicist that does shielding calculations. The focus is on shielding for imaging rooms, so there is much more relevant content for imaging physicists than there was in NCRP 49 which covered imaging and therapy shielding. New methods and techniques have been introduced which results in somewhat less conservative shielding requirements than what would have been required under the ultraconservative NCRP 49. Chapter 5 provides sample shielding calculations for just about every type of imaging room there is. This is a well written and much needed update to the original NCRP 49.

Even though I've already been through the draft, I'm going through it again, because this is the kind of thing medical physicists need to know like the back of their hand. Much of the content and calculations are similar to what was in NCRP 49, but there are enough new things in the rewrite that makes it worth studying thoroughly.

Dining with Robert

We had the pleasure of eating at Robert's of Charleston for the first time last night. We'd read about the restaurant several times over the years since we've been here, and finally had a chance to make it there for dinner.

Robert's is not your typical dining out experience. My first thought when I walked in was that it's a lot smaller than I expected. There is seating space for about 36 or so, and judging from when we finished dinner, only one seating per evening. A very cozy environment, although it can get a little loud at times with everybody talking over the piano playing in the background.

If you go, be prepared for a bit of a long drawn out dining adventure. Dinner is a 5 course prix fixe menu (including white and red wines), which may sound a bit daunting at first. However, courses are served with enough time in between to give you and your fellow diners plenty of time to savour each dish, and then relax and digest a bit before the next course arrives. Seating started at 7:30, and we left around 10:30. Be prepared to take your time. There's nobody rushing food to you or running you out the door so your table can be filled by the next party. You have all the time you need to enjoy and savour the food.

Then there is the singing. Chef Robert is, it seems a classically trained singer, and dinner begins with him singing in the appetizer as he walks around the room proudly displaying it to the guests. While the appetizer is being served by the rest of the wait staff, he sings a few more happy upbeat tunes. This happens several times throughout the night, making dinner almost a theatrical event and much fun.

The food is equally as good as Chef Robert's singing. Starting with a sea scallop mousse (much tastier than you might think it could be) and finishing with a decadent slice of triple chocolate tart, it was probably one of the most enjoyable dining experiences I've had in Charleton. It's a bit pricey though, so save your quarters before you go.

httpd go boom

For the past few weeks I've been dealing with a puzzling problem where this server becomes completely unresponsive. The first few times I caught I had to hit the power button to bring the system down. The third time I managed to catch it in the act with top(1) and discovered the httpd processes going absolutely bonkers. I also happened to be tail -f-ing the webserver access log at the time too. Oddly enough, there were httpd processes going nuts spawning and terminating processes over and over (load average spiked to over 100), but there were very few pages being served up. Took me a while to stop everything and kill off the httpd daemon. A check of the error logs didn't reveal anything enlightening unfortunately.

An upgrade to Apache 2.0.53 didn't seem to make things any better. It actually seems to have made things a little worse, since the problem seems to be cropping up more frequently.

At the moment, my prime suspect is mod_security, although I haven't read or seen anything about mod_security causing this kind of problem. But it started happening a few weeks ago on a previously stable server with no other changes other than adding mod_security to the mix. I haven't ruled out bad configuration on account of my own stupidity though. Also haven't ruled out that it could be because of using the 1.9dev1 version of mod_security either. I suppose I ought to test that out first.

Not much longer now

The driveway, walkway to the front door and back patio have been laid down, cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms installed and painter guys have started working. Doesn't look like it'll be too much longer now, and everything seems to be moving along nicely. Now if only I could get someone to let me know when they expect the house to be finished so I can give the 60 days notice on my apartment and let the appraiser guy know when to check out the place!

Einstein@Home is officially active!

The Einstein@Home project has officially gone public! Go help find gravity waves!

I've had a couple of computers crunching part time for the past couple of weeks during the beta testing (2 computers 12 h/day) and like most other distributed computing projects, it's pretty unobtrusive. Download and install the BOINC client and follow the instructions. With E@H, you can tell it the start and end times you want the client to crunch away. When the client detects any user activity it stops, giving you back the CPU until you're finished. Then it goes back to work.

GeoURL is back!

GeoURL is back! The 2.0 version is still in beta, but just as easy to use as before. In fact the required tags haven't changed at all and seems to function in pretty much the same way it did before. It was cool when I discovered it back in July 2003, and still is now that it's back.

Pop-unders are back

Those pesky pop-under ads are back. After switching to Firefox, it was so nice never having to see pop-up/under ads anymore. But someone's figured out a way around Firefox's pop-up/under ad blocking and now they're polluting my eyeballs again.

Argh.

So far only one website I (used to) visit on a regular basis (which I won't be anymore) has these new pop-up ads. Web advertising has become one of those necessary evils. I can live with ads plastered all over a website (obviously the less obtrusive and annoying, the better), but making ads pop up windows all over my screen like weeds is a guaranteed way of driving my eyeballs away from a site. I'm sure the same goes for many other geeks too.

Traditionally, the 'Vomitorium' is usually in the basement, which in most houses is usually unfinished or at least has one unfinished area (read: easily hosed down) that can easily serve the required function.

However, seeing as how Charleston is in the Lowcountry, and houses here typically have no basements (it's not called the Lowcountry for nothing you know) it's not really practical for the new house to have an indoor Vomitorium.

Fortunately, Charleston is sufficiently warm year-round (by Canadian Hooligan standards) that I think the screened-in porch out back could serve quite adequately as an outdoor Vomitorium. It has the benefit of being open with good air flow (so beer flatulence doesn't build up), is easily hosed down and dries quickly and has ample space for a large group of slumbering Hooligans. Easy access to the outdoors also means no stumbling around searching for the bathroom in an unfamiliar place.

Although I'm not familiar with this 'whore closet', there are a few places that could serve what I imagine the required function to be. Up in the FROG there are a couple of gnome-sized doors on either side to access a small amount of storage area. There is room in here for maybe 3 or 4 people (2 or 3 large ones) on each side. It is open to the outside though, so these people might have to share the space with the occasional squirrel, bat or other critter.
