Doggie play date

Yesterday we headed out to Wadmalaw Island to visit a friend and her 3 labs for a doggie play date.

Here's Bailey making sure everybody knows how the pond works

Simba's a pretty quick study

After cooling off in the pond, they came back to visit us

Bridgette decided to just watch our two nut dogs run around

but mostly she just wanted a little love and attention from the new people

Our two nut dogs spent most of the day doing this
An entire day of running and playing biteyface

I think watching all of their antics made Bridgette tired
I wonder when these crazy dogs are going to leave - Bridgett

TD 6 to watch

New tropical depression (#6) in the Atlantic to watch. Still too early to tell whether this will be of any concern, but looks like it's shaping up to become Florence soon.

From today's 5 PM discussion:

THERE IS SOME SOUTHWESTERLY SHEAR TO THE NORTHWEST OF THE CYCLONE...AND THIS COULD LIMIT DEVELOPMENT OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. AFTER THE TROUGH LIFTS OUT...THE ENVIRONMENT SHOULD BECOME MORE FAVORABLE FOR DEVELOPMENT AND BOTH THE SHIPS AND GFDL GUIDANCE BRING THE DEPRESSION TO HURRICANE STRENGTH.

TD6 - 3-Sep-06

Tropical storm train

TD 6 became TS Florence earlier this morning, although there's still about a weeks worth of watching before we need to worry about it.

On the tails of Florence is another system with some potential too. From this morning's Tropical Weather Outlook:

SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ASSOCIATED WITH A TROPICAL WAVE LOCATED SEVERAL HUNDRED MILES WEST OF THE CAPE VERDE ISLANDS HAS CONTINUED TO BECOME BETTER ORGANIZED. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS APPEAR SOMEWHAT FAVORABLE FOR A TROPICAL DEPRESSION TO DEVELOP DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS AS THE SYSTEM MOVES WESTWARD AT ABOUT 10 MPH.

'Tis the season.

40 years of Trek

Listening to CBC Radio this morning, they just had a short little segment talking about tomorrow being the 40th anniversary of the premiere episode of Star Trek.

Wow. 40 years. I still find it amazing that Star Trek has endured this long and become such an institution.

I'm not nearly old enough to have seen the original airing. I only saw it in syndication in the mid/late 70s, and it quickly became one of my favourite shows. It was already an institution by then. The movies started soon after and then the TV series began. The dozens of videotapes I have of TNG episodes are probably still sitting in my parents' basement.

I've always loved Star Trek. Mostly because, like a lot of sci-fi, it introduces all kinds of tantalizing possibilities for the future.

Looking forward to catching the newly remastered version of TOS. Hopefully there's a station around here that will be showing it.

The next gathering

Heather raises a very important subject this morning: Where and when to have our next blogger gathering. A Picnic Gathering at that.

I vote for a beach picnic. Go leave a comment and let's get the planning started!

Following Florence

While everyone's busy remembering 9/11 on this fifth anniversary (I've already said my thing a couple of years ago), I will point out TD 7, which looks to be following pretty much in Florence's footsteps. Looks like Bermuda may get a double dose of storms this week, although the current 5 day track has TD 7 passing well east of the island.

TD7 - 11-Sep-06

Update:As expected, TD 7 became TS Gordon with the 5 PM update. Shouldn't be of much concern to anyone except shipping.

GORDON MOST LIKELY WILL SPEND ITS LIFETIME OVER WATER. IT IS ALREADY MOVING TOWARD THE NORTHWEST OR 315 DEGREES AT 8 KNOTS AND SOON THE CYCLONE SHOULD TURN NORTHWARD TOWARD THE WEAKNESS IN THE RIDGE LEFT BY HURRICANE FLORENCE. IN FACT...MOST OF THE RELIABLE DYNAMICAL GUIDANCE IS ALREADY TO THE RIGHT OF THE OFFICIAL FORECAST. IN ABOUT THREE DAYS GORDON SHOULD TURN TO THE NORTHEAST AS IT BECOME EMBEDDED WITHIN THE MID-LATITUDE SOUTHWESTERLY FLOW.

TS Gordon - 11-Sep-06

Next system on the train

From this morning's Tropical Weather Outlook

A BROAD AREA OF LOW PRESSURE ASSOCIATED WITH A TROPICAL WAVE IS CENTERED NEAR THE COAST OF AFRICA ABOUT 250 MILES SOUTHEAST OF THE CAPE VERDE ISLANDS. THIS SYSTEM IS SHOWING SIGNS OF ORGANIZATION AND HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BECOME A TROPICAL DEPRESSION OVER THE NEXT DAY OR SO AS IT MOVES WESTWARD OVER THE FAR EASTERN TROPICAL ATLANTIC. ELSEWHERE

Update: Well, that didn't take long. The 11 AM NHC update upgraded the system to TD 8.

PRESENTLY THE SYSTEM APPEARS TO BE IN AN ENVIRONMENT OF WEAK EASTERLY SHEAR AND IT SHOULD BE TRAVERSING SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURES OF AROUND 28C. HOWEVER...WATER VAPOR IMAGERY SHOWS AN UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH NEAR 40W-45W NORTH OF 15N AND THE GLOBAL MODELS INDICATE THAT THIS FEATURE WILL PERSIST FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. IF THIS SCENARIO VERIFIES...THE ENVIRONMENT COULD BECOME LESS CONDUCIVE FOR STRENGTHENING. THE OFFICIAL FORECAST SHOWS ONLY SLOW STRENGTHENING OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS BUT PRESUMES THAT THE CYCLONE WILL BE ABLE TO EVENTUALLY STRENGTHEN INTO A HURRICANE. THIS OFFICIAL FORECAST IS SOMEWHAT LOWER THAN THE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE INTENSITY GUIDANCE.

TD 8 - 12-Sep-06

A cozy resting spot

Blogger picnic planning

Just to kick things up again and summarizing from the comments in Heather's initial post she's thrown out a date of September 23 to have an afternoon blogger and family picnic at JICP

Interested parties:

Anybody else interested? There's a nice shady picnic area kind of opposite the dog park area (the first left past the first stop sign you encounter once you enter the park) that would be a good spot for us. We can all bring our own picnic lunches or do a pot-luck thing (or a little bit of both). Should be a lot of fun!

Three simple rules for picking fruit

My friends and family always seem to be impressed with my ability to pick great fruit. To them it's some kind of magical skill. To me, it's just three simple rules. Follow them and anybody can pick great fruit.

  1. It should look good
  2. It has to smell like something. Preferably like the fruit it's supposed to be.
  3. It should be heavy for its size

Rule 1 is a bit of a no-brainer. If it looks good (not too bruised, good colour, feels firm, no mushy spots, etc), then it's a good candidate to start with.

Rule 2 is also something of a no-brainer. If you're looking for strawberries, you better be smelling strawberries. Don't grab the container that doesn't smell like anything. If you grab a cantaloupe, it should smell like a cantaloupe, not dirt. It should be a good smell too, not moldy or nasty smelling. Of course this rule won't apply to everything. Bananas usually don't smell like much until they're starting to get black spots (a little too ripe for my taste at that stage). Watermelons fall into this small subgroup too. For those, there's Rule 3.

Rule 3 is one that some people can't seem to quite get. It's simple really. Fruits are made up mostly of water. A fruit that's heavy for its size is going to have a high water content (i.e. be very juicy), and will probably be a pretty good one to bring home. One that feels too light on the other hand is probably old and lost most of its water content. Ever grab a navel orange that felt a little on the light side? When you bite into a piece, it's all dried out and not juicy at all I bet. Same thing with peaches.

Keep these in mind next time you're shopping for some tasty fruit snacks. I bet you'll pick up some good ones.

50 years of the hard drive

Can you believe it? 50 years ago, some big brained people at IBM developed the first hard drive. The hard drive is truly one of those things that revolutionized computers, enabling quick and easy access to data as opposed to much slower tape access.

From the Yahoo! article:

The integrated RAMAC was about two refrigerators in width and not quite as tall, and it literally weighed a ton. Its 50 24-inch platters were in a stack inside the unit, in an assembly that spun at 1200 revolutions per minute. The unit used two magnetic recording heads. The RAMAC could hold 5MB--about the storage that today is needed for one 5-minute MP3 encoded at 128 kilobits per second.

I remember my first encounter with a hard drive. It was a heavy metal box capable of storing 10 MB of data and fit into an IBM XT. Now there are hard drives with 750 GB capacities in a 3.5" form factor and no signs of capacity increases slowing down in the near future. This week we brought 20 TB of hard drive storage online and are in the process of populating it with stuff from the existing 5 TB RAID and stuff off the tape archive. It should be enough to hold about a year's worth of patient images online although we've projected that in a few years we'll need about 50 TB to hold the same amount of data online. Amazing isn't it. Makes me think of that saying "Data will always expand to fill your available storage".

Plenty of good reading out on the net for this notable anniversary. Over at Tom's Hardware they interview someone from Seagate about what's in store for future spinning disk technology.

Woot! for dogs!

Check it out! OneDoggieGoodie.com is just like Woot!, but they sell dog stuff instead. I have to admit I didn't really see too much in their previous offerings that I would actually buy for my dogs, but there were a couple of toys that I might have considered.

This Woot! thing must be catching on.

Remastered Star Trek:TOS

According to StarTrek.com, the new remastered episodes of Star Trek will start going on the air this weekend. They show it being aired by WTAT, which is the local Fox affiliate. Apparently they don't want anyone to watch it because the programmers at WTAT seem to have scheduled it at 1AM on the 17th. Looks like WMMP (the new MyTVCharleston station, formerly UPN) might be showing it too at 9PM on the 17th, but after that it starts showing up at 4 frickin' AM! Who the hell is up at 4 in the frickin' morning if they're not working! Infomercials get better treatment!

Bastards.

Now I'm going to have to reconnect the VCR or get TiVO or something.

Medevac view from an insider

I get to see the Meducare helicopter take off and land on a fairly regular basis. The helicopter comes in, lands on the helipad at the top of the parkade I park in and the patient unloaded and taken down to an ambulance waiting on the ground for the short trip over to the ER. Signal 46 has a fascinating entry about how things work on the other end when they're picking up a patient that most people never hear about.

So cool.

Blognic treats

4 days away and I haven't even thought about what I'm going to bring for the picnic. A couple others have so here's what there is to look forward to:

  • Dan - Deviled eggs
  • Heather - sesame ginger pasta salad (possibly)
  • Me - Pineapple upside-down cake (a picnic needs something sweet to enjoy)
  • Vera - Chicken, potato salad, and apple or cherry pie

I have some serious picnic meal planning to do tonight.

Blognic location

Just so that everyone is clear on where to meet, I thought over by the Picnic Center would be a good place for us to gather and picnic. If you look at the JICP map, it's kind of smack dab in the middle. After you enter the park, follow the road straight around the bend and past the first stop sign. Up ahead on the right will be a large parking area for the off-leash area. Just past this on the left side is the Picnic Center. There's a kid's playground and a building where the bathrooms and some vending machines are. For Google Earth saavy users, it's at roughly 32.733°N and 79.99°W, although it won't help much as there's a big cloud right over the aerial photo of the park.

I'll try to get there a little early and put some signs up.

Next potential storm?

Lest people start getting complacent with the last few storms steering away from the east coast and fall weather upon us, this is from this morning's Tropical Weather Outlook.

A LARGE TROPICAL WAVE...ACCOMPANIED BY A BROAD AREA OF LOW PRESSURE...IS LOCATED ABOUT 600 HUNDRED MILES WEST-SOUTHWEST OF THE SOUTHERNMOST CAPE VERDE ISLANDS. SOME GRADUAL DEVELOPMENT THE SYSTEM IS POSSIBLE OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS AS IT MOVES TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST OR NORTHWEST AT AROUND 15 MPH.

Blognic'ing

Mike, Heather and Jared already blogged about the blognic, and it seemed like everyone had a good time hanging out. I even got interviewed by Lucia from the Post & Courier. Even Nala had a good time and got lots of attention and compliments on how well behaved she was.

It took a little bit for people to figure out where to meet, but once people started spotting each other, it didn't take long for us to find a couple of picnic tables and start setting things up.

I find Vera's ability to knit and talk at the same time amazing. I think I'd probably end up stabbing myself if I tried to do that.

Nala loved all the attention, but I think she loved going after the bits of cake and cookies the kids would drop even more.

Mostly finished with the garage

Finally starting to see the end of the latest garage project. I've just about finished creating all the shelves and hangers we need (for now). They all fit on the rails and nothing's come unglued (yet). All I need to do now is put a couple coats of polyurethane on the shelves to make them look nice. Then we just need to arrange them so we can pull the car into the garage without smacking into anything.

Finally, shelves!

Hallowe'en thoughts

We're not quite sure yet how we're going to dress the dogs for Hallowe'en this year, but we spotted these cool jack-o-lantern bandannas at Superpetz today and couldn't resist them.

Spent fire extinguishers

So what does one do with spent fire extinguishers?

I've got a small extinguisher for the kitchen, and a medium sized one for the garage that are both sitting at empty. The garage one just seems to have depressurized over time. The kitchen one I had to use to put out a small fire in the oven that started up from stuff spilling over.

The kitchen one says "Discard/Replace extinguisher if pointer reads empty" on the pressure gauge. The label also says "Must be discarded" in tiny bold letters (it's a small label), so I take this to mean that this particular extinguisher can't be recharged. So what's the proper way to dispose of one of these? It's probably still got chemicals in it, so I'm hesitant to just toss it in the trash. Plus it's made of metal, so it could probably be recycled.

The pressure gauge needle on the garage one is sitting in the Recharge zone, and says "MUST BE RECHARGED" in slightly larger bold letters, so I assume this particular one can be recharged. I figure I can probably find a place in the phone book that does fire extinguisher service.

I should make a trip to the fire station down the road. I bet they can tell me what to do.

Zappo's

There's this new pizza place called Zappo's at King and Race St that we tried out yesterday. The wife says it's the best New York style pizza around (she ought to know). She's never been a fan of Andolini's, the perennial City Paper Best of, because she thinks the dough is too sweet.

Zappo's was a pretty decent pie. Thin crispy crust, slightly chewy (not as chewy as Andolini's) and not too sweet (just the way the wife likes it). Being a deep dish kind of pizza guy, Zappo's pizza didn't seem too different from the others I've had around here. Reasonably priced though. Haven't gotten around to trying the other items on the menu yet. It's located pretty much on the way home from the dog park, so I have a feeling we'll be stopping by on a quasi-regular basis.

More is better

Is it really? For imaging equipment it can be sometimes, up to a certain point. For gamma cameras, more heads is better because it shortens the acquisition time. Once you get up to 4 heads though, you start to run into practical limits like weight and head size.

There's a new CT scanner in the house from a big German company that starts with an S. It's not just any ordinary CT scanner though. This one has two x-ray tubes instead of the usual one. I missed the installation phase when the covers were off so I didn't get to peek inside the gantry to see how things were arranged. I would imagine that the tubes are arranged on opposite sides and slightly offset along the Z-axis (going into the gantry) so that instead of covering the regular 20-30 mm beam width, this thing probably covers twice that. That means it can acquire twice the data in a single rotation. It also means potentially twice the radiation dose to the patient.

Apparently a dual tube scanner proved useful enough to turn it into a commercial product. I'll get my hands on it today and put it through a few checks. It will be interesting to see how this thing performs. Once the apps people come through and set up some clinical techniques, it will be very interesting to see how the radiation dose compares to our other scanners. The timing is pretty good, since it's time for the annual survey on the CT scanners anyway. I'll be able to get some current data for the dose comparisons.

MT 3.33 security update

There's a security related update for Movable Type that just came out. Patches can be found at the Pronet blog. Updating is highly recommended.

Dogs don't need toys

Dog owners soon learn that their dogs don't need lots of toys, or expensive chew toys. Mine don't anyway. They're just has happy chasing an empty water bottle around and have just as much fun (if not more) doing it than with their toys. In fact given a choice, they usually go for the plastic bottle instead of all their other toys. Funny, but true.

It's like kids and boxes. Forget the stuff that came in them. They have more fun with the box instead.

It's still storm season

Compared to last year, this year's storm season so far has been a bit of a dud (thank goodness). There's still two months of the season left to go though. The latest system, TD 9, looks like it will stay out in the Atlantic like Florence, Gordon and Helene did and probably become TS Isaac in a day or two.

THE DEPRESSION IS CURRENTLY SITUATED BETWEEN AN UPPER-LEVEL CYCLONE TO ITS WEST AND A LOW- TO MID-LEVEL RIDGE TO ITS EAST. THE GFS...UKMET... AND NOGAPS MODELS ALL TAKE THE CYCLONE AROUND THE WESTERN PERIPHERY OF THE RIDGE...THEN ACCELERATE THE SYSTEM AT DAYS THREE THROUGH FIVE NORTHEASTWARD AHEAD OF A DEEP-LAYER TROUGH FROM THE WEST. THE OFFICIAL TRACK FORECAST FOLLOWS CLOSELY WITH A CONSENSUS OF THE AFOREMENTIONED GUIDANCE.

Another puppy in the family

The wife's mom got a new dog, a now 9 week old yellow lab named Macho. We told them they should get an older dog, but her mom insisted on a puppy. Now after a couple of weeks she wants to trade for one of our dogs until Macho gets out of his puppy phase.

Here he is hanging out on the lawn

Nala wasted absolutely no time showing Macho how much more fun sticks are to play with
