Identify this spider
Ok, there's this big nasty looking spider hanging out by the sliding door to our room at my wife's parents' house. Somebody tell me what it is.

Last week, while I was walking around the yard at my wife's parents' place, I ran across this largish dragonfly. It seemed like it would make a neat picture, so I took a photo. I thought it turned out pretty good, so I made it my current desktop photo.

Took this one yesterday morning at sunrise. It's a little blurry because of a slow shutter speed (1/4s) and lack of a tripod, but I think it captures nicely the neat orangy sunlight I get to wake up to most mornings.
Not quite sure what kind of spider this guy is, but I spotted it hanging out by the back door. I think the top side of it was a whitish gray with dark stripes. I thought the bright orange spots were kind of cool

Institute of Psychiatry IOP, not Isle of Palms IOP
Caught this view on the way to the car a couple of weeks ago. Turned out a little different than I thought it would.
This is one of the first pictures I took with the new camera. This was with a zoom factor of about 8 or 9 and shows how nicely the image stabilization works. It's much reduced from the original 32xx by 23xx (8 MP) pixel image. I'm really liking this camera so far.
A colony of fire ants took up residence next to the patio, so I thought I'd try the camera out on them and catch them in action.
Finally sorted through all the pictures from my trip to Edmonton and posted a bunch in my gallery. Go check them out.
This is the corner grocery store/diner that Dad used to own when we were kids. Mom used to take us there on weekends where we'd either hang out in the back or help out getting stuff off the shelves or bagging. Sometimes we even got to play with the calculator. Dad eventually closed the diner part (turning it into more grocery store space) and then closed the store for good in the early 80s. It seems to have been a succession of pawn shops ever since then.

Mom says I was 10 months old in this picture.
I brought back my old photo album with me, so there are plenty of pictures that I need to digitize. Time to go scanner shopping.
Snoqualmie Falls near Seattle, WA
Had an excellent trip up to the Seattle area last week to visit my sister and brother. The day after I arrived in Seattle, we took off on a road trip to BC to visit my brother. I got to meet baby Jocelyn, the newest addition to the family
I also got to meet my other niece, Vivian for the first time.
It was nice seeing all the kids together again
We spent a couple of days there, then came back and did touristy things in Seattle, like visiting Pike Place Market. Even got to see some of the fish flinging that goes on at the Pike Place Fish Co.
Saw cheese being made at Beechers
and visited the Seattle Aquarium
Here's a sea star getting ready to make a meal of a big clam
Went hiking down to Snoqualmie Falls
A short but sometimes steep hiking trail takes you past a small power generating plant to an observation deck near the bottom of the falls
We visited the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery where I learned all about the life cycle of salmon and got to see a bunch of little salmon growing up in holding tanks
and went out to dim sum a couple of times (you've already seen those pictures). Found time to visit a little zoo, the Cougar Mountain Zoological Park where we saw lots of interesting animals
And then after what seemed like no time at all, it was time to head back home. Even managed to make it all the way back home without getting stuck in Memphis this time.
Don Lewis snapped this picture of me taking a picture of the group last night.
I think I also have a picture of him taking this picture.
Some of the tornado damage from last week's storm. This is some of what we saw as we were heading out to the Charleston Tea Plantation.
